Someone invariably comes along with unexpected advice that forever alters your life’s trajectory. It could be a teacher, a coach, a poet. In my case it was Alan Shapiro.

My wife and kids have long heard me tout him as a sage guide who set my path forward. We weren’t friends, only desk neighbors in high school English who annoyed each other. But he made his mark in two separate encounters five years apart that no mentor or confidant ever equaled.
